Hopefully, we all know what the 5-S strategy for manufacturing is at Texas Die Casting (Sort, set-in-order, shine, standardize and sustain).
Hopefully, we all recognize that 5-S is for every employee at Texas Die Casting who runs an operation, checks a part, uses tools, fills out paperwork or does any job. (The cleaner and more organized your area is, the easier and safer your job becomes.)
Do you also realize that the 5-S strategy is not a tool for management or supervisors, it is for you. The tools in your work area have been put there so you don’t have to walk around, looking and waiting for the proper tools or supplies.
The cleanliness tours are performed so you won’t have to work in an unsafe, disorganized area which puts you at risk. Since 5-S is for you, you also have an obligation to help keep up with tools and make sure they are in the proper spot so that you can begin your job on time. Clean-up and organize your work area every day so that each new day is easier and safer than the day before. Share your input with your leaders so that the tools you need will be available to you, increasing your efficiency. Volunteer to help with the 5-S tours and resolve issues that are noted.
One thing that long term, successful, world class companies have in common, is that there is ‘a relentless pursuit of perfection’. Check on your own 5-S commitment at Texas Die Casting and see if you’re doing your part.
